Volume Formulas Explained
Master the essential formulas for calculating volume of 3D shapes.
Cube Volume
V = side cubed. The simplest 3D volume formula. All edges are equal, so multiply the side length by itself three times.
Sphere Volume
V = (4/3) x pi x r cubed. Where r is the radius. Useful for balls, globes, and rounded objects.
Cylinder Volume
V = pi x r squared x h. Calculate the circular base area and multiply by height. Used for tanks, pipes, and cans.
Cone Volume
V = (1/3) x pi x r squared x h. A cone is 1/3 the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height.
Rectangular Prism
V = length x width x height. Also called a cuboid. The most common shape for boxes and rooms.
Pyramid Volume
V = (1/3) x base area x height. Works for any pyramid shape. The base can be square, rectangular, or triangular.
